IEX Q2 FY27 Profit Climbs 13% YoY to ₹139 Crore as Trading Volume Surges
Indian Energy Exchange Ltd (IEX) announced on 29 October that its consolidated net profit for the July‑September quarter of FY27 rose 12.9 % year‑on‑year to ₹139.24 crore, driven by higher electricity trading volumes amid strong power demand and rising spot‑market prices. The company’s earnings report, released after market close, highlighted a 12.7 % increase in trading volumes to 39.7 billion units. IEX’s performance reflects the broader trend of heightened electricity consumption during the September quarter.
During the same period, IEX’s consolidated revenue from operations grew 8.6 % year‑on‑year to ₹167.1 crore, up from ₹153.92 crore in Q2 FY26. The rise in revenue was supported by increased trading activity and higher market‑clearing prices. The company’s financial filing for the quarter shows a steady upward trajectory in earnings, with net profit increasing to ₹139.24 crore from ₹123.35 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year in the same reporting period.
For the first half of FY27, IEX reported a consolidated net profit of ₹274 crore, up 12.3 % year‑on‑year, and revenue of ₹324.97 crore, rising 9.9 % YoY. Electricity trading volumes for the half‑year increased 14.2 % to 77.2 billion units. The company noted that power demand across India grew 11.5 % year‑on‑year to a record 502 billion units in the September quarter, driven by elevated temperatures linked to El Niño and deficient monsoon rainfall in the final quarter.
The average market‑clearing price in IEX’s Day‑Ahead Market rose 46 % year‑on‑year to ₹5.7 per unit during the quarter, while Real‑Time Market prices increased 49 % to ₹5.2 per unit. Higher spot prices can encourage generators and buyers to trade through exchanges, though volumes depend on electricity availability, fuel costs and procurement decisions by distribution utilities. The market also faced fuel‑supply constraints, with domestic coal production falling 1 % year‑on‑year to about 445 million tonnes in the first half of FY27. Coal inventories were at nearly eight days of consumption as of 22 October, and stocks at about 100 power plants were at a critical level of around three days.
IEX shares closed 2.57 % higher at ₹105.35 per unit on the National Stock Exchange on Thursday, 29 October, after the results were announced. The company’s market capitalisation stood at ₹9,393.98 crore as of that date, according to NSE data. The earnings release, issued post‑market, underscored the exchange’s ability to capture gains from rising demand and price dynamics in the electricity sector and demonstrated resilience amid market volatility.
