Axis Bank Shares Drop 5% After Q2 Earnings Miss, Despite Strong Profit Growth

Axis Bank’s shares fell as much as 5% on Monday, October 19, marking the bank’s biggest single‑day decline since December 16, 2025, to an intraday low of ₹1,225 on the National Stock Exchange. The drop came after the bank reported a net profit of ₹7,003 crore for the July‑September quarter, a 38% rise from ₹5,090 crore a year earlier, yet narrowly missing the LSEG‑compiled analyst estimate of ₹7,124 crore. Rising bond yields and rupee volatility during the quarter weighed on the bank’s treasury income, contributing to the sell‑off, Reuters reported.

Goldman Sachs noted that Axis Bank’s QFY27 earnings were largely in line with expectations and that the cyclical inflection in core pre‑provisioning operating profit (PPoP) growth remains on track. The investment bank highlighted improving visibility on net interest margins (NIMs), strong retail disbursements, a pickup in CASA growth run‑rate, and a turning rate cycle as key drivers. However, it identified fee income growth as a key challenge, with muted growth, while expecting continued cost optimisation to partly offset that.

Bernstein described the quarter as mixed, citing lower credit costs that drove earnings growth despite weaker core trends. Loan growth remained robust and corporate‑led, but strong borrowing pushed the loan‑to‑deposit ratio sharply higher to 95%. Citi pointed out elevated operational expenditure from one‑off labour code provisioning and FCNR charges, alongside muted mid‑single‑digit fee growth, which masked robust core operational resilience. The headline NIM contracted 10 basis points QoQ to 3.36% due to optical FCNR(B) distortions, while core margins held firm at 3.47%.

Axis Bank’s asset quality improved, with gross non‑performing assets (NPAs) falling to 1.16% of total advances from 1.46% a year earlier, and net NPA standing at 0.35%. Gross NPAs declined to ₹16,777.52 crore from ₹17,307.74 crore year‑ago. Net interest income rose 12% annually to ₹15,371 crore from ₹13,745 crore a year earlier. The bank’s CEO, Amitabh Chaudhry, emphasised a focus on building a franchise that combines innovation, trust and execution at scale, highlighting advances in digital payments, AI‑driven innovation and strategic partnerships.

At 10:32 a.m., Axis Bank shares traded 3.8% lower at ₹1,241, underperforming the NIFTY50 index which was down 0.4%. The stock was the top loser in the NIFTY50 index. The decline reflects market sensitivity to the bank’s fee income outlook and cost‑optimization expectations, despite the strong profit growth and improved asset quality reported in the second quarter.
