IDBI Bank Q2 FY27 Net Profit Declines 39% YoY Amid Higher Base and One‑Off Gain
IDBI Bank announced its July‑September quarter results for FY27 on 17 October, reporting a 39.1% year‑on‑year decline in standalone net profit after tax (PAT) to ₹2,205.45 crore, compared with ₹3,627.36 crore in the same quarter of FY26. The fall was attributed to a higher base from a one‑off gain of ₹1,699 crore realised in FY26 through the sale of an 11.11% stake in National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL) via an offer‑for‑sale transaction. Excluding this impact, the bank’s net profit improved 14% YoY in Q2 FY27, while operating profit rose 59% YoY.
Despite the profit dip, IDBI Bank’s interest income grew nearly 20% to ₹8,512 crore in the September quarter, up from ₹7,104 crore in the same quarter of FY26. Net interest income (NII) stood at ₹4,228 crore, marking a 29% YoY rise and a 21% sequential increase. Net interest margin (NIM) rose 40 basis points YoY to 4.11%, and 50 basis points QoQ, reflecting stronger earnings from the bank’s core lending and borrowing activities. The bank’s gross non‑performing assets (NPAs) contracted by 53 basis points to 2.12% in Q2 FY27, down from 2.65% in the same period a year earlier.
Operating expenses increased about 15% YoY to ₹6,973 crore from ₹6,071 crore a year earlier, contributing to the lower PAT figure. Provision for bad loans or NPAs was a negative ₹853.62 crore, compared with a negative ₹578.80 crore in FY26. The bank’s asset quality improved, with gross NPAs falling to 2.12% and the provision for bad loans reflecting a more conservative stance. The higher operating costs and the one‑off gain from the NSDL stake sale were the primary drivers behind the profit decline.
The Union Cabinet approved the strategic restructuring of a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank to Canada‑based Fairfax Financial. The Government of India will sell a 30.48% stake and LIC will sell 30.24% to Fairfax, with proceeds of ₹52,878 crore divided proportionally. Fairfax will pay ₹81 per share, above the benchmark fair value of ₹75.99 set by two independent valuation agencies, aiming to enhance the bank’s capital base post‑privatisation and reduce dependence on government assistance.
Shares of IDBI Bank have risen 34.5% over the last five years and about 20% in the last three years, but have fallen 8.9% in the last year. Year‑to‑date, the stock has lost 19% in 2026, yet gained 1.3% in the last month and 1.1% in the last week. The market capitalisation was ₹90,449 crore as of the trading session on 16 October 2026, reflecting investor sentiment amid the strategic stake sale and Q2 earnings release.
The bank’s Q2 FY27 results highlight a mix of robust interest income growth and higher operating costs, alongside a significant one‑off gain that inflated FY26 profits. The strategic stake sale to Fairfax is expected to provide a stronger financial footing, potentially improving the bank’s competitive position in the Indian banking sector while allowing it to generate funds independently of government assistance. Investors will closely monitor the impact of the restructuring on future profitability and asset quality as the bank navigates the post‑privatisation landscape.
