HDFC Bank Q2 Earnings: Net Profit Up 5%, Net Interest Income Rises 10%

HDFC Bank, the country’s largest private‑sector lender, announced on Saturday, 17 October that its net profit for the second quarter of the current financial year rose 5 % to ₹19,510 crore, up from ₹18,641 crore in the same period last year. Net interest income, the difference between interest earned on loans and paid on deposits, increased 10 % to ₹34,619 crore, reaching ₹34,619 crore at quarter‑end.

The bank’s net interest margin stood at 3.16 % on total assets and 3.32 % on interest‑earning assets, according to the statement. Net interest income rose from ₹31,551 crore in the year‑ago period to ₹34,619 crore, a 10 % increase. This growth reflects higher loan earnings and a modest rise in deposit costs over the quarter.

Asset quality improved as gross non‑performing assets (NPAs) fell to 1.11 % of total advances at quarter‑end, down from 1.24 % in the same period last year. NPAs stood at 0.37 %, with gross NPAs amounting to ₹35,810 crore versus ₹34,289 crore previously. Provisions and contingencies for the quarter ended 30 September 2026 were ₹3,570 crore, and the total credit cost ratio was 0.44 %.

Gross advances reached ₹32,19,500 crore at quarter‑end, a 16.3 % rise over 30 September 2025. Advances under management grew 15.3 %, retail loans increased 11.7 %, small and mid‑market enterprise loans advanced 23.5 %, and corporate and other wholesale loans rose 16.4 %. Overseas advances represented 3.3 % of total advances. Average CASA deposits were ₹9,71,200 crore, up 10.7 % from ₹8,77,000 crore in September 2025 and 1.5 % from ₹9,57,000 crore in June 2026.

At quarter‑end, the bank operated 9,706 branches and 20,881 ATMs across 4,177 cities, up from 9,545 branches and 21,417 ATMs in 4,156 cities a year earlier. Fifty percent of branches are in semi‑urban and rural areas, and 14,365 business correspondents, mainly manned by common service centres, support the network. Employees numbered 2,10,109 as of 30 September 2026. Shares closed 0.28 % higher at ₹728.85.
