ICICI Life Insurance Q2 FY27 VNB Soars 21% YoY, Shares Rise 3%

ICICI Life Insurance Ltd, formerly ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company, reported a 24.8% year‑on‑year increase in standalone profit after tax to ₹374.22 crore for the July‑September quarter of FY27, up from ₹299.96 crore in the same period of FY26. The company’s shares advanced 3% to hit an intraday high of ₹460.20 on the National Stock Exchange, reflecting investor confidence in the robust quarterly performance. The profit rise was largely driven by higher shareholders’ investment income and improved surplus generation in the policyholders’ in‑force book.

The annualised premium equivalent (APE) for the quarter rose 16.6% to ₹2,799 crore, compared with ₹2,400 crore a year earlier, indicating steady growth in new business written. Value of new business (VNB) reached ₹712 crore, a 21% jump from ₹590 crore in Q2 FY26, supported by a VNB margin of 25.43% versus 24% in the prior year. VNB, also known as new business profit (NBP), measures the present value of future profits to shareholders.

In the first half of FY27, ICICI Life Insurance’s profit climbed 26.5% YoY to ₹760 crore, up from ₹601 crore in H1 FY26, driven by higher shareholders’ investment income and better surplus generation. VNB for the six‑month period rose 22.3% YoY to ₹1,283 crore from ₹1,049 crore, with a margin of 26%. APE increased 15.1% YoY to ₹4,935 crore, supported by a 10.6% YoY growth in the number of policies, reflecting continued expansion of the customer base.

Chief Operating Officer Sidharatha Mishra highlighted customer centricity as the core ethos guiding ICICI Life’s long‑term strategy, emphasizing protection and annuity as key focus areas. He described the organisation as resilient, backed by a well‑diversified distribution network, innovative product portfolio, customer‑first sales and service, industry‑leading quality parameters, and strong risk and capital metrics. Mishra added a commitment to deliver sustainable VNB growth while balancing business, profitability and risk prudence.

Analysts at Nomura noted that the company’s VNB margin of 25.4% in Q2 FY27 missed the estimate of 26.7%, citing a pick‑up in non‑participating insurance policies and expecting agency channels to grow faster in the coming years. JP Morgan analysts observed that while VNB growth was strong YoY, the margin fell 129 basis points QoQ to 25.4%, moderated after a strong Q1 due to lower protection. Bernstein analysts attributed margin expansion to a favourable mix shift in new sales, with strong growth in retail protection, annuity and partnership channels.

Goldman Sachs analysts focused on product mix as the driver of margin improvement, remaining cautious about top‑line forecasts but confident in medium‑term sustainable VNB growth. Jefferies analysts noted that VNB margin stayed below expectations, citing a higher group funds mix and growth in APE led by group business. At 12:40 PM, the stock traded 1.39% higher at ₹453.20 per share, with a market capitalisation of ₹65,769.97 crore as of October 14, 2026, according to NSE data.
