RBL Bank Shares Fall Over 8% Despite 170% YoY Profit Surge in Q2

RBL Bank shares fell more than 8% on Tuesday, October 13, after the opening bell, as investors scrutinised the July‑to‑September quarter earnings. The institutional lender posted a 170% jump in standalone net profit to ₹482 crore, yet the stock slid to an intraday low of ₹381.40 from ₹417.70 at the previous close. The decline reflected concerns over elevated credit costs, the impact of a recent equity fundraising and muted earnings per share growth, which tempered enthusiasm for the bank’s robust profit rise.

Trading activity on the day surpassed 1.54 crore equity shares, a figure that represents more than five times the one‑week average of 30,33,185 shares. The high‑volume loss was triggered by a 4.6‑fold increase in trading activity compared to the past two‑week average of 33,61,214 shares. By 1:20 pm IST, RBL Bank shares were trading 7.6% lower at ₹385.80, underscoring the sharp sell‑off that followed the earnings release.

In the Q2 FY27 earnings, RBL Bank’s net interest income rose 37% year‑on‑year to ₹2,131 crore from ₹1,551 crore in the same quarter a year earlier. The bank’s net interest margin improved by 48 basis points to 4.61% from 4.13% a year ago. Earnings per share grew modestly to ₹3.11 from ₹2.92 in the prior year, reflecting the bank’s solid but tempered profitability amid rising costs.

A deeper look into the financials revealed that credit costs increased 53% year‑on‑year to ₹771 crore from ₹503 crore. Citibank analysts attributed the rise to standard asset provisioning and persistent card stress, expecting costs to normalise to 6% in the second half of FY27. The equity fundraise, which raised up to $1 billion through Euro Medium Term Notes, added to the subdued sentiment, as it expanded the bank’s capital base and interest income, thereby diluting immediate earnings impact.

Goldman Sachs analysts noted that the turnaround potential will be gradual, supported by stronger‑than‑expected FCNR(B) inflows. They project earnings growth of 11%/12% in FY28/FY29 and a valuation at 19x FY28 EPS, higher than current prices. Citibank foresees 35% growth for FY2027 and 20% growth for FY2028 and FY2029, indicating a cautious but positive long‑term outlook.

NSE data shows RBL Bank shares have risen 103% over the last five years and delivered nearly 60% returns in the past three years, with a 35% increase in the past year. On a year‑to‑date basis, the shares have risen 24% but are down 4.4% in the past month, and have declined nearly 5% in the last five sessions. The bank’s market capitalisation stood at ₹60,787 crore as of the trading session on October 13, 2026.
