SENSEX Gains 400 Points as IT Stocks Lead Market Rally
Indian equity indices surged after the opening bell on Friday, October 9, with the NIFTY50 and SENSEX recording gap‑up starts. Investors focused on a recovery following Thursday’s sell‑off, buoyed by a pullback in U.S. Treasury yields and a modest decline in crude oil prices. The rally was underpinned by earnings momentum in the IT sector, where firms such as TCS, Infosys, HCL Tech and Mphasis posted strong results. The market’s positive tone reflected optimism about corporate earnings and a shift away from the earlier volatility that had seen the indices dip earlier in the week.
At 9:15 am (IST), the NSE data showed the benchmark NIFTY50 index opened 0.37 % or 83 points higher at 22,314.95 points, compared with 22,231.80 points at the previous equity market close. The BSE SENSEX index opened 0.25 % higher at 71,776.67 points on October 9, versus 71,593.24 points at the prior close, according to exchange data. Before the opening bell, GIFT NIFTY futures traded 0.17 % higher at 22,423 points, signalling a positive start after the massive sell‑off during the previous session.
During the morning trade, NIFTY50 rose 0.66 % to hover around 22,380 points as of 9:34 am (IST), while the BSE SENSEX gained nearly 500 points to trade near 72,085 levels, providing relief to investors after the ₹10 lakh crore wealth wipeout. Despite the bullish sentiment, investors remained cautious as foreign institutional investors continued selling pressure, offloading ₹12,943 crore worth of capital market assets across the stock exchanges on Oct. 8. This selling was part of a broader trend of FII outflows in the market.
Data showed that the U.S. 10‑year benchmark Treasury yields eased marginally to 5.22 %, away from their multi‑year high levels, providing a positive cue for equity investors amid global uncertainty. Global crude oil prices fell from their highs of $105 per barrel to trade around $103 per barrel during Friday’s morning market hours. The sharp spike earlier in the week was attributed to the latest tanker attack off the northern coast of Qatar and fears of a second supply‑chain disruption in the region.
Top gainers on the benchmark NIFTY50 as of the morning market hours were Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) up 5 %, Infosys up 2.8 %, HDFC Life Insurance up 2.3 %, Apollo Hospitals up 2.3 % and Eicher Motors up 2.2 %. Among the laggards were BEL down 1 %, Reliance Industries down 0.7 %, Cipla down 0.4 % and BSE down 0.2 %. Out of the 50 stocks listed under the NIFTY50 index, 45 were trading in the green zone, four were in negative territory and one remained unchanged as of 9:50 am (IST).
