HDFC Bank Shares Fall After Foreign Investors Cut Stake by 2.43% in FY27 Q2
HDFC Bank shares fell on Thursday, 8 October, after the latest shareholding pattern data revealed that foreign institutional investors reduced their stake by 2.43 percentage points in the July‑to‑September quarter of FY27. The private‑sector lender’s market value slipped as the foreign investors’ holding dropped from 41.83 % at the end of the April‑to‑June quarter to 39.40 % in the latest report. The sale of 2.43 % of the bank’s equity was largely absorbed by domestic institutional investors and other public shareholders, shifting the ownership balance in favour of local participants.
After the opening bell, HDFC Bank’s stock slipped 0.58 % to an early market low of ₹698.65 per share on Wednesday, compared with ₹702.75 at the previous equity market close, according to NSE data. Trading activity exceeded 3.6 million equity shares in the morning across both NSE and BSE, as investors reacted to the dented sentiment following the foreign‑institutional‑investor stake sale highlighted in the latest shareholding release. The mixed pre‑market tone on the NSE foreshadowed the day's downward trajectory, with the bank’s price hovering near the lower end of its recent trading range.
The shareholding pattern for the quarter ended September 2026 shows a clear shift in ownership. Domestic institutional investors increased their stake to 43.63 % in Q2 FY27 from 41.92 % at the end of the June quarter, while foreign institutional investors fell to 39.40 % from 41.83 %. Government and other public shareholders rose to 16.97 % from 16.25 %. The 2.43 % stake sold by foreign investors was largely taken up by domestic institutions and other public shareholders, as reflected in the updated percentages. The table below summarises the key figures for Q2 FY27 and Q1 FY27.
