Pharma Shares Surge 6% as Nifty Pharma Climbs 1.5% on Defensive Tilt

On Monday, September 21, Indian pharmaceutical stocks rallied, lifting the Nifty Pharma index by 1.51% to an intraday high of 27,115.90 points, up from 26,710.10 at the previous close. The rally was led by Sun Pharmaceuticals, Wockhardt, Mankind Pharma, Torrent Pharma and Biocon, reflecting investor confidence in defensive names amid global monetary tightening, lower energy prices and a positive outlook for the healthcare industry. The sector benchmark’s rise underscored a shift from high‑growth sectors such as IT and banks, which faced selling pressure.

High‑growth sectors like IT and banks were under selling pressure, prompting investors to rotate capital into defensive stocks such as Pharma, Healthcare and FMCG. This shift aimed to seek stability amid tightening monetary policy worldwide. After touching its intraday peak, the Nifty Pharma index retraced slightly, trading about 1.2% higher at 27,046 points as of 11:27 am IST on September 21, indicating a modest pullback from the peak while maintaining an overall positive trajectory.

Indian pharma companies are largely export‑dependent, with the United States as their primary market for medicines and medical equipment. The recent decline in global crude oil prices is expected to reduce freight costs for these companies, providing a cost advantage. Biocon, for instance, reacted positively to corporate updates, while the broader healthcare sentiment remained upbeat, supporting the sector’s performance and reinforcing the defensive tilt among investors.

Biocon’s wholly owned subsidiary, Biocon Biologics Ltd, secured a positive opinion recommendation from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for its Pertuzumab biosimilar, Pebrilzo, a 420 mg concentrate solution for infusion. The biosimilar will be used with Trastuzumab and chemotherapy to treat adult patients with HER2‑positive breast cancer across multiple disease stages, including adjuvant therapy, thereby expanding access to biologic therapies in Europe.

The company’s CEO and Managing Director, Shreehas Tambe, highlighted the importance of the EMA approval in expanding access to biologic therapies for patients with HER2‑positive breast cancer in Europe. The European Commission will next conduct a final review of the application before issuing a final decision, as the EMA authorisation alone is not sufficient for EU market entry, underscoring the regulatory pathway still ahead.

Market experts predict that the long‑term outlook for India’s healthcare sector will be supported by rising demand, increased affordability and innovation opportunities in niche therapies and complex specialities. While structural tailwinds exist, the outperformance of individual companies will depend on earnings growth relative to valuations, according to Bernstein analysts who view the sector as constructive for the coming years, reinforcing the positive sentiment that drove the sectoral gains on Monday.
