L&T Secures ₹10,000-Crore Thermal Power Order in Jharkhand, Shares Dip
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced on Wednesday, 7 October that its Energy CarbonLite Solutions arm has secured a Limited Notice to Proceed (LNTP) order from DVC CIL Power Private, a joint venture of Damodar Valley Corporation and Coal India. The order covers two 800 MW ultra‑supercritical thermal power generating units in Jharkhand, with the project’s total capacity of 1,600 MW. L&T will design, engineer, manufacture, supply, erect, test and commission boilers, steam turbines, generators, electrostatic precipitators and associated mechanical, electrical, control, instrumentation and civil works. The deployment of ultra‑supercritical technology will enable higher thermal efficiency and lower specific emissions, supporting reliable and efficient power generation.
L&T stated in a regulatory filing that DVC CIL will issue the notice to proceed only after the project secures the requisite environmental clearances and the LNTP period is completed. The company classifies major orders between ₹5,000 crore and ₹10,000 crore, placing this contract within that bracket. The project, named Chandrapura, is expected to contribute significantly to India’s growing electricity‑generation capacity and help meet the increasing power requirements arising from industrial expansion and economic development.
T. Madhava Das, Senior Executive Vice President & Whole‑time Director—Energy Hydrocarbon at L&T, said, “Being developed by DVC CIL Power Private Ltd, the project strengthens our association with leading public‑sector power utilities and will contribute meaningfully to meeting the country’s growing power requirements. We look forward to supporting the successful execution of this important project.” He added that the project underscores the continued role of high‑efficiency thermal power generation in India’s evolving energy mix. As electricity demand rises, advanced thermal technologies can play an important role in providing reliable baseload power while improving efficiency and environmental performance.
