IndiGo Raises Fuel Charges Amid Rising ATF Prices

IndiGo announced on Monday that it will raise fuel charges on both domestic and international flights, citing a sharp rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices. The increase follows a steep ₹16 per litre hike in ATF prices from Thursday, driven by firming international oil prices. The airline said the continuous rise has pushed ATF costs to levels among the highest in the last decade.

Fuel charges on domestic routes will be revised upwards by up to ₹1,300, depending on distance. The new domestic rates are: 0‑500 km ₹375; 501‑1,000 km ₹600; 1,001‑1,500 km ₹900; 1,501‑2,000 km ₹1,150; above 2,000 km ₹1,300. International routes will see increases of up to ₹10,000, with specific charges set for different regions.

For international flights, the revised charges are ₹1,000 for flights up to 500 km and ₹3,000 for flights of 501 km and above within the SAARC region. Flights to Southeast Asia, GCC, Middle East routes, and North and East Asia will carry a charge of ₹5,500. These changes will take effect from 6 October and are expected to push airfares higher.

State‑owned oil companies reported that ATF prices for domestic airlines rose to ₹137 per litre from ₹121. This latest increase follows a ₹6.28 per litre, or 5.46%, hike in September and a ₹5 per litre increase in August. IndiGo said the fuel charge rise is relatively modest compared with the larger increase that would have been required to fully offset the rise in fuel costs.

IndiGo expressed regret over the additional burden these revised fuel charges may place on customers, stating it would continue to monitor the situation and make adjustments as appropriate. The airline highlighted that the increase in fuel charges is a response to the steep rise in ATF prices and aims to balance cost pressures without imposing excessive fare hikes on passengers.
