BSE Shares Surge 3% Ahead of NIFTY50 Reshuffle, Wipro Falls 2%

BSE shares surged 3% on Tuesday, September 29, reaching an intraday high of ₹3,191 per share, up from ₹3,097.50 at the previous close. The rise coincided with investors eyeing the upcoming semi‑annual NIFTY50 index reshuffle, which is expected to bring significant fund flows. In contrast, IT giant Wipro fell about 2%, touching an intraday low of ₹158.59 from a closing price of ₹161.56. Both movements reflected market anticipation of the index rebalancing scheduled for September 30. The BSE's free‑floating market capitalisation stood at ₹1.28 lakh crore mid‑day, while Wipro's was ₹43,000 crore.

The NIFTY50 benchmark comprises the top 50 NSE‑listed companies, ranked by free‑float market capitalisation and sector performance. BSE was added to the index effective September 30 after its six‑month average free‑float market capitalisation surpassed roughly ₹1.40 lakh crore, eclipsing Wipro’s average of about ₹1.28 lakh crore. This technical qualification made BSE eligible for inclusion, while Wipro remained outside the top‑50 cohort. The decision reflects the exchange’s emphasis on market size and liquidity as primary criteria for index constituents.

BSE’s free‑floating market capitalisation of ₹1.28 lakh crore has driven a YTD gain of more than 21%, supported by rising market participation and trading volumes across asset classes. Conversely, Wipro’s shares have declined over 40% year‑to‑date in 2026, with a 12% drop in the past month and a 4% fall in the last five days. The IT sector’s underperformance relative to the benchmark has been attributed to sectoral headwinds, including challenges in artificial intelligence adoption, which have weighed on investor sentiment.

The index reshuffle is anticipated to trigger substantial fund inflows and outflows as passive funds, hedge funds, and ETFs rebalance portfolios to mirror the new constituents. Media estimates suggest that BSE shares could attract nearly $595 million in inflows, while Wipro may experience outflows of approximately $152 million. Such movements are expected to generate near‑term volatility, influencing share performance as institutional investors adjust holdings to align with the updated index composition.

Alongside the NIFTY50, other major NSE indices will also undergo additions and exclusions, potentially causing temporary price movements across multiple stocks. Investors should monitor these changes closely, as the rebalancing process can lead to significant short‑term swings in both included and excluded securities. The market’s reaction to the reshuffle will likely be most pronounced in the days immediately following the index update on September 30.

Readers are advised to consult a qualified financial advisor before making any investment decisions related to the NIFTY50 reshuffle or any individual security. The reshuffle is scheduled for the last working day of September, which falls on Wednesday, September 30. The inclusion of BSE and exclusion of Wipro are expected to alter portfolio weights, prompting passive funds to adjust holdings. Market participants should be aware that such changes can lead to increased volatility and liquidity shifts in the affected stocks.
