PB Fintech Shares Rally 4% After Last‑Week Rout; Bernstein Warns of Near‑Term Pain

PB Fintech shares rose 4% on Monday, September 28, after a bruising week that saw the stock plunge 36% in a single session and lose more than a third of its value in just two trading days. The rally lifted the shares to ₹1,213.50 apiece on the NSE in early trade. The sharp sell‑off had been triggered by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India’s (IRDAI) proposed changes to the commission structure and expense limits for insurance distributors, raising concerns over the company’s earnings and profitability. Investors are now reassessing the potential impact and the longer‑term growth prospects of the Policybazaar parent.

The IRDAI proposals aim to overhaul the commission framework and impose stricter expense limits on insurance distributors. The changes are expected to reduce PB Fintech’s insurance take rates by up to 40%, potentially cutting FY28E consolidated revenue by 36%. The shift towards a trial‑based structure could also defer cash flows, creating an initial working‑capital drag. These regulatory adjustments have prompted heavy selling in the stock, but the recent rebound suggests that market participants are weighing the extent of the impact and the company’s resilience.

Bernstein maintains a bullish stance on PB Fintech, citing sharp upside potential while flagging near‑term pain. The investment bank’s scenario analysis assumes a 40% reduction in take rates and a 36% cut in FY28E revenue, with Paisabazaar providing some cushioning. Bernstein also factors in a potential 4% cut in FY28E premium growth, though it notes a wide range is possible. The bank believes organic premium growth, currently estimated at 35‑40%, will reset to a lower level in FY28E, with lower customer pricing driving a partial volume offset.

Under its scenario, Bernstein projects a 34% cut in FY28E PAT versus its previous estimate, expecting FY28E profit at ₹11 billion, below the FY27E PAT estimate of ₹12.5 billion despite cost‑control measures. The bank believes core‑business direct costs can be reduced meaningfully in FY28E as growth spending pulls back, before normalising from FY29E as growth spending resumes. Phased indirect‑cost rationalisation is built into FY28E and FY29E, supporting the recovery of earnings to ₹20 billion by FY30E, though this remains below the earlier estimate of ₹32 billion.

PB Fintech is a digital insurance and financial‑services platform operating brands such as Policybazaar, the company’s insurance marketplace, and Paisabazaar, a digital marketplace for credit products. The company earns revenue through insurance distribution and other financial‑services activities, with its business growth linked to customer additions, insurance premium volumes and monetisation of its platform. The recent regulatory changes and Bernstein’s analysis highlight the company’s exposure to commission structures while underscoring potential cost‑control measures and long‑term earnings recovery.
