Bharat Dynamics Shares Rise After Securing ₹802-Crore Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon Contract
Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) saw its shares rise 2% on Thursday, September 24 after signing a ₹801.79‑crore contract with the Ministry of Defence. The deal, announced post‑market close, covers the procurement of 160 Satellite Smart Anti‑Airfield Weapons (SAT‑SAAW) and related equipment for the Indian Air Force under the Buy (Indian – Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category. The contract’s value and the strategic nature of the weapons contributed to the upward movement in BDL’s stock price.
The Ministry of Defence stated that delivery of the SAT‑SAAW will occur in two phases, first between 2027‑2028 and then between 2028‑2029. The weapons are air‑to‑ground precision‑guided glide bombs capable of being launched from platforms such as the Jaguar, Hawk and Su‑30 MKI. They are designed to neutralise enemy airfields from a long stand‑off range, enhancing the Indian Air Force’s strike capabilities while maintaining a safe distance from hostile air defence systems.
Indigenously designed and developed by DRDO, the SAT‑SAAW system incorporates 60% indigenous content. The contract also includes indigenisation of key sub‑systems such as the Initial Measurement Unit, Long Impact Delay Fuse and Twin Store Carrier. These components are expected to further boost self‑reliance in defence manufacturing, aligning with the government’s Aatmanirbharta objectives. The integration of these sub‑systems will enhance the overall performance and maintainability of the weapon system.
In its first quarter of the 2026‑27 financial year, Bharat Dynamics reported a 547% year‑on‑year rise in standalone net profits, reaching ₹119 crore compared with ₹18 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Sequentially, net profits increased 5% to ₹113 crore from the fourth quarter of the fiscal year ended 2025‑26. The profit surge was driven by a 130% gain in revenue from core operations, which rose to ₹572 crore from ₹248 crore in the same period last year.
BDL shares climbed to an intraday high of ₹1,181.50 on the National Stock Exchange on September 24, after the announcement. The stock has risen 2% overall but has fallen 14% over the month and 21% year‑to‑date. It reached a 52‑week high of ₹1,654 on September 22, 2025, and touched a year‑low of ₹1,086 on March 30, 2026. As of September 24, 2026, the company’s market capitalisation stood at ₹43,107.75 crore according to NSE data.
